14:30: Reached Hue. Proceed to see the two Mausoleums of Minh Mang King and Tu Duc King

Before his death in 1883, Tu Duc spent several years preparing his mausoleum. The major elements of the tomb complex were constructed between 1864 and 1867, as were subsequent temple complexes that provided Tu Duc and his many wives with an opulent retreat during his lifetime. A failed coup against Tu Duc occurred in 1866 because the construction of the mausoleum required so much corvee labor and extra revenue. This was suppressed, and Tu Duc spent the rest of his life in the royal structures of the tomb.

The 40 structures that make up the Minh Mang Mausoleum are built vertically along a symmetrical axis (Than dao) that extends 700 meters from the Dai Hong gate to the wall behind the tomb.
