  • Vietnam Mango Export To South Korea:

Vietnam is the Republic of Korea's (South Korea) third-largest mango supplier globally, yet only 5.8% of the Asian nation's overall imports come from Vietnam, according to data from the Import-Export Department of the Ministry of Industry and Trade. The department states that Vietnamese companies have plenty of space to grow their fruit exports to South Korea shortly. To increase exports to Korea, it urged Vietnamese exporters to fully utilize the advantages provided by the Vietnam-Korea Free Trade Agreement (VKFTA).

According to the agency, which cited data from the Korea International Trade Association (KITA), South Korea imported 8,000 tons of mangos worth $36.4 million from Vietnam in the first three months of 2023—a decrease of 18% in volume and 19% in value from the same time the previous year. The Vietnam Trade Office in South Korea predicts that in 2023, a variety of factors will still have an impact on Vietnam's exports to the nation due to the significant pressures the Korean economy confronts from rising interest rates and inflation.

To encourage the export of Vietnamese goods, particularly processed foods and agricultural and aquatic products, to South Korea, Vietnamese companies should focus particularly on adhering to the nation's Sanitary and Phytosanitary Standards (SPS). The office stated that to increase sales opportunities in South Korean supermarkets and distribution channels, attention should be paid to strengthening exchanges and cooperation activities between domestic business associations and their Korean counterparts, as well as with South Korean distribution corporations like Lotte Mart, E-Mart, Home Plus, and CJ Home Shopping.

It also suggested other actions, such as helping Vietnamese businesses advertise and sell their goods on well-known Korean e-commerce platforms like Coupang and Gmarket, enticing Vietnamese exporters to participate in esteemed trade shows in South Korea, and planning study visits for Korean businesses interested in establishing trade and investment partnerships with Vietnamese businesses and associations. It further stated that Vietnam specifically requires a more robust system to entice Korean companies to collaborate and invest in growing agricultural goods for sale to South Korea.

Vietnam and Korea saw a 300% and 130% increase in Japan's imports of mangoes, respectively, which created many opportunities but also put producers under constant pressure to raise quality.
The aforementioned details were shared with mango producers on March 15 during an online seminar hosted by the Dong Thap Plant Protection Sub-Department. At the moment, Vietnam exports mango products to 53 countries and fresh mangoes to 22 nations, primarily China. Mango exports to other nations are expected to reach 600,000 tons in 2021, a 42% increase from the previous year. Which is comparable to Korea's 130% rise in output, with export volume to Japan tripling from 215 tons in 2020 to 640 tons last year.
