10:00: Beginner Craft Classes:

Learn 3 handicraft art techniques: To He (Animal Cake), Water coconut leaf weaves (Origami), and Calligraphy.

• To He Craft (Animal Cake):

Tò he (also known as "Thuong Bot") is a traditional Vietnamese children's toy that may be swallowed.  Making "Tò he" is a traditional activity in Vietnam's rural communities, especially in the north. Originally, "tò he" was a product made of flour used for offerings, frequently taking the shape of animals such as peacocks, chickens, buffaloes, cows, pigs, fish, etc., so people termed this product "bird and stork toys".

• Coconut leaf weaves (Vietnam Origami):

The water coconut leaves used to fold toys must be old enough to retain flexibility and bright yellow color.  If you choose leaves that are too young, they will be difficult to shape because they are too soft; on the other hand, leaves that are too old will be extremely hard and easily broken.  With a few folds, twists, and pins, you can turn water coconut leaves into amusing and beautiful animals.  With a few dotted shadows from watercolor pens or a few expert cuts with scissors, the fish, crabs, peacocks, and pigeons' eyes, fins, and tails will be alive and beautiful.

• Calligraphy:

Vietnamese calligraphy was popularized in two ways:  The first method is motivated by nostalgia for a time when Chinese and Nom characters were prevalent.  Artists depicted Vietnamese characters (in Latin letters) in the shape of round or square Chinese characters, or "reverse" writing, which can only be seen well from the back of the page.  The second direction represented the form of Vietnamese letters in the Western writing system known as the Latin alphabet.
