HOW TO TRAVEL TO PHONG NHA CAVE IN VIETNAM

* Hanoi to and from Phong Nha Cave:

If you start in the capital of Hanoi, there are several transportation choices to go to Phong Nha:

Bus: Several firms, including Hung Long, Queen Cafe, and Camel Travel, provide overnight busses that leave between 6:00 PM and 7:30 PM and arrive in Phong Nha about 5:00-6:00 AM the following day.

Train: Take the overnight train (SE3) from Hanoi to Dong Hoi, which leaves at 7:20 PM and arrives around 5:00 AM. Arrange a transport from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha.

Flight: Fly from Hanoi to Dong Hoi Airport (1 hour and 25 minutes), then take a shuttle to Phong Nha.

* Ho Chi Minh City from and to Phong Nha Cave:

Flight: The most feasible alternative is to travel from Ho Chi Minh City to Dong Hoi and then arrange for transportation to Phong Nha.

Alternative Route: For budget tourists, try flying to Da Nang or Hue, then taking a bus or train to Dong Hoi City, from there take a bus to Phong Nha Cave.

* Hoi An/ Da Nang/ Hue City from and to Phong Nha Cave:

Bus: Hanh Luyen Bus operates from Da Nang Central Bus Station, with departures at 9:45 AM and 5:30 PM.

Train: Take the train from Da Nang to Dong Hoi and then arrange for a transportation to Phong Nha.

Private Transfer: Available from Hue (VND 2,500,000), from Da Nang (VND 4,000,000), from Hoi An (VND 4,500,000) per car, each trip.

Where is Phong Nha Cave located?

Phong Nha Cave is located in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in Quang Binh province (which was formally merged into the new Quang Tri province on July 1, 2025, although "Phong Nha-Ke Bang" retains the accepted destination name). The cave is located about 45 kilometers west of Dong Hoi city and is accessible by boat from the riverside town of Phong Nha.

The cave system runs 7,729 meters and contains the world's longest underground river. The cave's name, "Phong Nha," translates to "Wind and Teeth," referring to its wind-swept entrance and tooth-like stalactite formations. The cave was first mentioned in writing by Vietnamese scholar Duong Van An in 1550, and the Cham altar inscriptions date from the 9th-10th. centuries.

Cave entrance: The boat will transport you right to the cave's entrance. The cave opening is rather big, allowing boats to enter easily.

The boat will cruise approximately 1.5 kilometers inside the cave. The boat's lights will highlight spectacular rock formations, stalactites, and stalagmites.

Deboard: At some time, the boat will come to a sandbank, and you will be able to deboard and explore on foot.

Walking tour: Continue for another 400-500 meters within the cave to observe even more magnificent rock formations and old Cham shrines.

Return journey: After exploring on foot, you'll board the boat to return to the cave entrance and the boat landing in Phong Nha town.

Important information for entering Phong Nha Cave:

During the rainy season (October through December), excessive water levels may prevent boats from entering the cave. Always verify local circumstances before going.

The cave is well-lit throughout, so a light or headlamp is unnecessary. However, the lighting is limited; bring your smartphone or camera for shots.

Tien Son Cave (the "Dry Cave" close to Phong Nha) can be integrated with your tour for a nominal additional price; it's entered via steps and walkways rather than boat.
