NHA TRANG COVID-19 GUIDANCE

Quarantine and testing

Although Vietnam’s COVID-19 infection numbers are low, where there are suspected cases Vietnam’s authorities apply quarantine and testing requirements robustly and quickly, often with little or no prior warning. This may result in areas being locked down and individuals required to self-isolate and/or quarantine and be tested. This may include community testing.

If you come in contact with someone who has tested positive for coronavirus you must expect to undergo quarantine in a government center for a minimum of 14 days and possibly longer if you test positive at any point. Should you test positive, you will be treated in a Vietnamese hospital. On discharge, you will be expected to undertake a period of self-isolation. You should expect to be tested at least 5 times prior to release from the hospital and will be required to produce 3 consecutive negative tests during quarantine and a further two consecutive negative tests during self-isolation.

Once you have completed quarantine and self-isolation you should receive a document confirming this. Please retain this. The Vietnamese government has confirmed that it will cover quarantine costs in government facilities. This does not include those arriving in Vietnam since 1 September 2020 who will have to pay for quarantine costs. All foreign nationals will be personally responsible for paying for any coronavirus hospital treatment costs.

Vietnamese quarantine centers are basic. Should you be asked to undertake testing/self-isolation and/or quarantine you should comply. Failure to comply can be an offense with significant punishments. Vietnam’s quarantine requirements are mandated by the Vietnamese Ministry of Health. The British Embassy and Consulate General are unable to intervene in having these requirements waived, shortened, or changed. Violations carry strict penalties.

Travel in Vietnam

Community transmission of COVID-19 was detected in Da Nang city on 25 July. Cases linked to this initial outbreak have now been identified in other cities and provinces including Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The government of Vietnam, city and provincial authorities has implemented a wide range of measures to stop the spread of the virus.

There is a partial lockdown in and restriction of travel to and from Da Nang and some parts of Quang Nam province. All flights from Da Nang and public transport within and out of Da Nang have been suspended. Private transport from Da Nang is liable to be stopped at provincial borders and travelers may not be allowed to proceed. Schools are closed. People are required to stay at home as much as possible and comply with local regulations.

From 28 August the partial lockdown in Hoi An has been lifted. The measures in place for those traveling from Hoi An to other cities and provinces depend on the destination. You are advised to check with your travel provider what local measures are in place at your destination before you travel. Those traveling from Hoi An to Hanoi should expect to undergo testing and quarantine in a government center for 14 days. Those in Hoi An from 7-13 August traveling to Ho Chi Minh City, should expect to have to undergo testing and self-isolation at home for 14 days. Those in Hoi An from 14-28 August traveling to Ho Chi Minh City should expect to have to undergo testing and quarantine in a government center for 14 days.
