Hon Mun Island is located to the south of Hon Tre Island, approximately 10 kilometers from Vinh Truong port and 14 kilometers from Nha Trang's city center. Hon Mun, Vietnam's first Marine Protected Area, is regarded as "Southeast Asia's aquarium" due to its rich environment, which includes numerous endangered marine animals and stunning coral reefs.

The local weather here is mild, so you can visit the island at any time of the year. However, the ideal time to visit Hon Mun Island is from April to July. This is the dry season which is very suitable for sightseeing and snorkeling. On the other hand, you should refrain from going to the island from September to November because there are a few storms in these months, which makes it not safe for tourists to try underwater activities.

According to published papers, the Hon Mun coral reef is of international importance and has the highest biodiversity in Vietnam, with around 1,500 types of creatures, 350 of which are coral, out of 2,000 coral and marine life species globally. In addition to coral, Hon Mun's marine life includes around 250 species of reef fish, 112 species of mollusks, 122 species of crustaceans, 27 species of echinoderms, 69 kinds of seaweed and seagrass, and hermit crabs that live in mollusk shells.

Snorkeling is a popular pastime among Hon Mun Island visitors. On summer days, the sea is calm and transparent, and the coral reefs are more apparent and colorful, creating an underwater panorama as dazzling and fantastical as a true paradise.

When snorkeling, tourists will be provided with specialist diving equipment such as an outfit, propellers, oxygen tanks, glasses, and so on. All of the diving experiences here include specialists who will walk you through the fundamental rules before you leap into the sea. As a result, you will have a perfectly safe underwater experience.

The finest diving season in Hon Mun is from March to July each year because of the ideal water conditions and little waves. Hon Mun coral reef, located around 10 kilometers from Vinh Truong harbor, has become a popular diving site for both Vietnamese and foreign divers, particularly for scuba diving.

"Just dive to a depth of 10 m to admire the wonderful scenery of Hon Mun aquarium, from coral reefs to diverse marine creatures,". Coral reef fish are frequently bright and appealing, but certain species, like the lionfish (shown), develop spines to defend themselves and fight predators. This fish's huge pectoral fins are like wings on its back, projecting long and venomous spines when slowly swimming closer to the bewildered prey and stabbing them with their spines.

The four locations are the north of Hon Rua Island, the artificial reefs at Vinh Hoa Ward, the northeast of Tri Nguyen Island, and the waterways that connect Bai Tranh and Bai Soi.

According to the Nha Trang Bay management committee, the coral reefs and ecosystems in these locations are diversified, and hence permitting diving there would have little effect on canal traffic. The committee also believes that the initiative might enhance tourism.

Dinh Van Thieu, deputy chairman of the Khanh Hoa People's Committee, has urged that Nha Trang and the Nha Trang Bay management committee solicit feedback from key sectors before finalizing the plan and presenting it to provincial authorities.

According to officials, criteria for choosing dive enterprises must be set, as well as steps to combat illicit diving and continue efforts to rehabilitate Nha Trang Bay.

Nha Trang Bay, which spans around 250 km2, is one of Vietnam's 16 marine conservation sites. The area is home to a variety of corals and ecosystems, as well as numerous popular diving destinations for visitors.

However, bleaching has caused a dramatic deterioration in the bay's coral reefs. To conserve the reefs and aid in their recovery, the Khanh Hoa People's Committee has banned and forbidden all swimming and diving activities in the Hon Mun region beginning in June 2022.

The Hon Rom region, located around 13 nautical miles from the mainland, is a severely protected part of the Nha Trang marine conservation site, yet diving is still permitted. Some enterprises in the area provide certified short dive tours for visitors.

Dam Hai Van, deputy chairman of the Nha Trang Bay management committee, stated that diving in the Hon Rom region would be prohibited in the future, thus new alternative diving places should be provided to assist in maintaining the coral reefs.
